University health officials have ordered a sufficient quantity of the H1N1 influenza vaccine for all students who want to be vaccinated. The University is following CDC recommendations to vaccinate pregnant women, people who live with or care for children younger than 6 months of age, health-care and emergency medical services personnel, people between the ages of 6 months and 24 years old, and people ages 25 through 64 who are at higher risk of H1N1 because of chronic health disorders or compromised immune systems. For updates about distribution of the H1N1 vaccine and general information about H1N1 influenza, visit Alert Carolina web page, http://alertcarolina.unc.edu/go/site/1395

The Department of Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) is holding clinics to administer the nasal form of the vaccine to students, faculty and staff in these target groups. Most people in these groups should be able to receive the nasal vaccine. An appointment is necessary to receive the nasal form of the H1N1 vaccine. To schedule an appointment at one of the dates below, click on the EHS Web site link: http://www.ehs.unc.edu/ueohc/h1n1flushot.shtml.

The below clinics for the nasal form of the vaccine are:

12:00noon to 8:00p.m.

Monday, 11/23: Student Union, Room 2518 (by appointment or walk-in)

8:00a.m. - 5:00p.m.

Monday, 11/30: Student Union, Room 3206
Tuesday, 12/1: Student Union, Room 2518
Wednesday, 12/2: Student Union Room 3206
Thursday, 12/3: Student Union, Multipurpose Room
Monday, 12/7: Student Union, Room 3206
Tuesday, 12/8: Student Union, Room 3206
Wednesday, 12/9: Student Union, Room 3206
Thursday, 12/10: Student Union, Multipurpose Room

Pregnant patients eligible for health care services at Campus Health Services should call 919-966-6577 (Women’s Health Clinic) to schedule an appointment with the Women’s Health Nurse for the H1N1 influenza vaccine.

The vaccine comes in two forms: nasal spray and shot. Because the University has received significantly more nasal spray than shots, we ask that all those who qualify for the spray be willing to get that form of the vaccine so that more of our students and employees can be vaccinated. You will find information about the two different forms of the vaccine and the one that is right for you on the CDC Web site, http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/vaccination/public/vaccination_qa_pub.htm.

There will be no out-of-pocket expense for students who have the following insurance coverage: the State Health Plan, Blue Cross Blue Shield; Partners; Aetna; Humana Gold; SummaCare; or Advantra Freedom. However, you must bring your insurance card and a photo ID to the clinic. If you are not insured with any of these companies, you can still get the H1N1 influenza vaccine, but you will have to pay an administrative fee of $12 (cash or check). The fee is paid to an outside health-care agency for the nurses and other staff providing the vaccination service, not to the University.
