After-hours Care
(when Medicine Clinic is closed)

During the fall and spring semesters, after the primary care clinics are closed CHS offers an acute care service for minor illnesses and injuries that cannot wait until morning.  This clinic is staffed by an experienced mid-level practitioner with physician back-up and is open from 5 pm to 8 pm.   After the building is closed, a nurse advice hotline, Healthlink, is available for medical questions and advice on when to seek medical care.  Call 919-966-2281 to speak with HealthLink after hours.

The Campus Health fee does not cover all aspects of After-hours care.  Patients are charged for the visit plus any ancillary services like lab, X-ray, or a specialty consult.  All special diagnostic tests obtained through the UNC Hospitals Radiology Department is billed through the UNC Hospitals billing system.  All consulting specialists and hospitalization charges from UNC Hospital are not covered by the CHS health fee.

Winter Break and Holidays
Campus Health Services is closed for patient care at various times during the winter break and selected holidays.  When treatment is needed for an emergency or urgent condition during the time CHS is closed, please seek medical attention at the nearest emergency department during daytime hours from 8 am to 5 pm.  After 5 pm and on weekends and holidays, call 919.966.2281 to obtain medical advice from HealthLink.  At any time of the day or night, if you feel your condition is a life threatening emergency, call 911.

As a benefit of the health fee paid for the current semester or summer session, a program has been instituted to provide financial assistance for emergency care at UNC Hospitals when the CHS is closed. The financial assistance limit is $500 per incident limited to the ER visit only. Payments for follow-up visits outside of CHS are the patient’s responsibility. Consideration for the financial assistance includes the following:

  1. A student must have previously paid the Campus Health Fee for the current semester or summer session.
  2. A referral to the Emergency Department made by a HealthLink nurse.
  3. A medical condition that warranted Emergency Department level of service. Examples include but are not limited to bleeding, difficulty breathing, chest pain, suspected fracture and extreme pain.
  4. For acute conditions during daytime hours when CHS is closed for holidays and HealthLink is not available.

Students who are covered by the UNC Student or Post Doc Medical Plans should contact Student Blue at 967-5900 to receive instructions for filing a claim under the UNC Hospital Emergency Room benefit.

Requests for financial assistance for routine or minor medical care services received at UNC Hospitals Emergency Department will not be considered.

If the medical condition qualifies for financial assistance, bring the final bill (after all insurance claims have been applied) to the Patient Accounts office, Administration East, second floor of CHS, or call 966-6597 for further information.

After Hours HealthLink
